You may know that I am completely obsessed with flatlays. Being a brand photographer, I strongly reccomend business owners to hire someone to take flatlays for them, but I also understand that sometimes, your budget simply doesn’t allow to hire someone. So, I wanted to write this post to explain how to take flatlays with just your phone!
TOOLS:
All you really need is sunshine + a good background and you are good to go.
Examples of good surfaces to use: bed sheet, couch, solid coloured or marble table, flat tray, floor or coffee table. If you want to spend a little bit of money, you can always buy a styling board. If you want to save $ you can buy a foam core board, which can be purchased at the dollar store for super cheap!
PROPS:
Then I would gather items to use for your photo. I like to use things like my glasses, pens, notebook, laptop, greenery, flowers, washi tape, old cameras, vintage stamps or a cup of coffee.
I gather all those items before I start taking pictures so that I can easily switch items in and out.
Next is the creative part: choosing how to style your flatlays. Let this be fun, and experiment with what looks good visually! Check out some of the images I have taken:
Hope this inspired you to get creative with your shots!
I have put together a little video explaining my process if you are a visual learner:
